Ursula von der Leyen

The president of the European Commission is German and comes from the same conservative CDU as former Chancellor Angela Merkel, in whose cabinet she served, and Friedrich Merz, the current head. Crucially however, she comes from the Merkel wing of the party, which could create friction if the CDU regains power in Berlin. After steering the bloc through the tail-end of Brexit, Covid and Russia’s war on Ukraine, she has started a second five-year spell running the EU’s lawmaking machine.
