‘Situation back to normal.’ Police deal with suspicious package near European Commission.

BRUSSELS — Law enforcement evacuated an EU building and shut the main road in Brussels’ European Quarter on Tuesday after a suspicious package was discovered in the area.

Traffic was briefly halted on the busy Rue de la Loi, the main thoroughfare running through the city’s European Quarter near the European Commission’s Berlaymont headquarters, before the road was reopened at 2:20 p.m.

In a message at 1:55 p.m., the Commission told staff: “Police intervention. Suspicious item in front of Loi 65. Stay away from the windows. Avoid the area.”

In a second message at 2:20 p.m., the institution reported to its workers that: “Police intervention near the building finished. Situation back to normal.”

While law enforcement was investigating, the street was cordoned off with police cars and fire trucks on the main road while the Copernicus building — home to the Commission’s digital department DG CONNECT — was evacuated by police officers.

Local police and the fire brigade did not officially comment on the ongoing situation.
